Scotland has a rich and distinctive linguistic and literary heritage. The main languages used in Scottish speech and writing are a mixture of ‘Scottish English’ and its close cousin ‘Broad Scots’. In addition, Scots Gaelic survives in the Highlands and Islands as well as having a significant presence in Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow. This talk looks at new digital resources for exploring the vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation of the languages of Scotland. The focus is mainly on everyday speech, in Scottish English and Broad Scots. The talk will also demonstrate how members of the audience can access and use the free, online Scottish Corpus of Texts and Speech (SCOTS), and the new Corpus of Modern Scottish Writing 1700-1945 (CMSW).

John Corbett is a full Professor in the Department of English at the University of Macau. He was Principal Investigator of the SCOTS and CMSW projects, and he has written and edited various books and articles on language and literature in Scotland, and corpus-based language study, including Language and Scottish Literature, The Edinburgh Companion to Scots (with Jane Stuart-Smith and J. Derrick McClure), Written in the Language of the Scottish Nation and Exploring English with Online Corpora (with Wendy Anderson).

讲座摘要：
The world Englishes framework, which was first proposed in Kachru (1985), offers unique insights into the historical spread of English across four historical diasporas. The historical spread of English at different time periods to various locations under several unique social conditions have produced a rich array of English varieties, which can also be referred to as Englishes. This presentation will briefly outline the spread of English in its historical development as an international language and demonstrate how three types of colonialism — namely 'settlement colonialism', 'trade colonialism' and 'exploitation colonialism' — have produced different 'Englishes'. Likewise, this dispersion of English has produced a number of 'English literatures'. The most recent diaspora of English as a second language to countries without historical colonial links to English-speaking countries suggests that the development of 'Englishes' is in no ways finished, but instead entering a new stage of development.

讲座人简介：
Andrew Moody is an Associate Professor of Linguistics in the English Department at the University of Macau, where he teaches Sociolinguistics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has taught at universities in Beijing, China and Japan before coming to Macau and holds a PhD in English from the University of Kansas, USA. His research interests include the development of varieties of world Englishes and the role of English in popular culture, especially within Asia. His articles have appeared in American Speech, World Englishes, Asian Englishes and English Today. Currently he is editing, together with Jamie Shinhee Lee, a collection of essays for Hong Kong University Press entitled English in Asian Pop Culture. He is also involved in a long-term research project examining language shift in Macau.
